In the name of God the most merciful, the most compassionate, the most loving Peace and Prayers Upon Prophet Muhammed and his pure family
Salam dear sisters, non-binaries and brothers,
The Queer Inclusive french community is taken aback by Orlando massacre and send its sincere warm condolences and solidarity with the families of the victims and survivors along with all the LGBTQ people persecuted and executed worldwide by states instrumentalizing Islam for religious political repressive agendas.
We denounce the media hype of this horrible event and its misappropriation to feed islamophobic and racist rhetorics against muslims experiencing discrimination on a daily basis. Linking identity, ethnic affiliation and religion is a dangerous assignment serving divisive interests and throwing the muslim community into the popular scapegoat.
We will not allow this to happen in our name for many reasons, essentially because as queer muslims in our diverse spectrum, we face racialization, racism, islamophobia and objectification from french civil society and political actors claiming secularism, including in the LGBTQ mainstream community.
On a different level, in France, we have been advocating for specific laws against hateful religious discourses targeting LGBTQ people in public spheres or private areas, including religious institutions and spaces. In United-States, we all know the harmful construction of anti-LGBTQ hatred through the so-called « anti-Trans/Gay» bills driven by religious fundamentalist. Those extremist evangelical homophobic ideologies have been exported in Africa & Europe and joined by other fanatical movements claiming Islam, led by wahhabi-salafi institutions.
Orlando is another massacre added to the long list of oppressions and crimes against Queers all over the world from some countries sitting in the human rights council. LGBTQ communities have to deal with exclusion from blood donations, pathologization, discriminatory laws against same-sex love, marriage, reproductive and sexual health rights, religious hatred, violence and executions. We call upon the spiritual responsability of muslim community leaders to be aware of the rise of homophobia, its normalization and to take necessary measures to deconstruct and immedialtely act on it. Our second call is theological, we are convinced that time is up to launch a deep reassessment of scriptures' interpretations and Hadiths legitimizing violence and exclusion against LGBTQ.
We urge the french state to deeply engage with islamophobia, muslims have to deal with after each terrorist attack and to question its institutionalization which damages the cohesion of our society by nurturing tensions amongst minorities.
We urge you all, reading this statement, to send your Peace & Prayers Upon those souls taken suddenly by hatred, religious fanatism and inability to love
